Diabetes Alert Day 3/27

News & Events  /  Uncategorized

Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Approximately 84 million American adults—more than 1 out of 3—have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, 90% don’t know they have it.  Know your risk by taking this short questionnaire at http://www.diabetes.org/are-you-at-risk/diabetes-risk-test/

If you are at risk, there are things you can do! You will not automatically develop type 2 diabetes if you have prediabetes. For some people with prediabetes, early treatment can actually return blood glucose levels to the normal range.

Research shows that you can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes by 58% by:

  • Losing 7% of your body weight (or 15 pounds if you weigh 200 pounds)
  • Exercising moderately (such as brisk walking) 30 minutes a day, five days a week
